Masking Incompetence Through the 'Hunter-Killer' Performance

Political performance is the seizure of cognitive entries, transforming imagined threats into a legitimacy of power.

This piece uses satire to strip away the mask of Conservative politician Chris Philp. A man who once 'solved' immigration by housing arrivals in hotels now adopts the 'Hunter-Killer' persona, attempting to establish his identity through an extreme, militarized expression. In my framework, this is a 'False Optimal Expression': lacking the actual capacity to stop the boats, he performs the role of a brave soldier threatened by foreign navies to sell a facade of strength to the electorate.

The absurdity peaks as he weaponizes the objective fact of French sailors firing into the sea—a non-event—into an 'existential war' targeting him personally. He is not just deceiving the public; he is attempting a reconstruction of his subjecthood, transforming from a mediocre bureaucrat into a strategic pawn feared by Macron. This logic is classic: when the Actual capacity is abysmal, one manufactures a massive Potential threat to bridge the gap, using that void as political capital.

Kemi's reaction reveals the ecology of this complicity. Within the masculine-centric narrative, as long as the performance aligns with the aesthetic of 'strongman' power, collaborators will amplify it, even escalating the fantasy to the thrill of 'tactical nuclear strikes.' This is no longer a debate on border security, but a Cosplay competition of who can appear more dominant. This process of aestheticizing violence and narrating fear is the peak of cultural violence in politics—it ensures the actual victims (the migrants in rubber dinghies) vanish from the narrative, leaving only two political actors performing 'national security' on a stage.
