The Privilege of Being Allowed to 'Hide' in the Garden
This readers' photography gallery in The Guardian is essentially a complicity of the 'comfort zone'. A photo of a cat hiding in hostas is defined as 'the best' because it precisely fits the middle-class cognitive entry point of nature, private property, and sentimental narratives. In this aesthetic logic, the subject (the cat) is an absolute object; its 'hiding' is romanticized as a quirk rather than a gamble of survival.
Such sentimental narratives are typical covers for cultural violence. By defining what is 'beautiful' or 'healing,' they shift attention away from the structural violence of the real world. While praising the coziness of a pet, people are collectively conspiring to maintain the illusion that 'the world should be this quiet.' This illusion erases all life forms that cannot gain entry through 'cuteness' or 'refinement'.
Under the meta-violence of the masculine-centric narrative, this 'gentle gaze' is often the ultimate form of control: you are permitted to exist in this praised space only when you are harmless enough and 'hide' perfectly within the defined aesthetic frame. What is labeled as 'the best' is, in fact, the most perfect compliance.
