The 'Messi of Ballet' and the Erasure of Female Agency

Defining female achievement through male symbols is a textbook exercise in meta-violence.

The Guardian labels Marianela Núñez as the 'Messi of ballet.' This is a classic masculine-centric narrative: even when a woman reaches the pinnacle of her field, her excellence must be validated through the projection of a male symbol to achieve public 'legitimacy.' In the logic of meta-violence, Messi remains the sole yardstick for 'the greatest,' and Núñez's subjectivity is quietly demoted to a mere reference point while being praised.

Starting with the objectifying term 'bombshell,' the piece quickly pivots to her love for football. This narrative trap attempts to dissolve the power imbalance by framing it as a romantic affinity. But the reality is that in ballet—an industry of extreme discipline and brutal biological walls—a 44-year-old woman staying at the top is a war against muscle atrophy, hormonal shifts, and age anxiety. The media chooses to mask this structural struggle with descriptors like 'sunny temperament' and 'resilience,' using cultural violence to beautify a grueling existential game.

The most telling complicity appears in the discussion of agents. Her refusal to enter the commercial PR pipeline, citing Sylvie Guillem, should be a reclamation of agency against the weaponized expression of the industry. Instead, the journalist spins it as a positive 'delay.' Furthermore, framing her growth through the 'confidence' provided by four male partners once again anchors female achievement within a network of relationships with men.

When she declares there is 'no expiry date,' she is indeed crashing against the biological wall. However, as long as this victory is wrapped in the shadow of 'Messi,' it is not a handover of interpretative power, but rather a 'high-performance' act within the established patriarchal rules.
