While we enjoy the convenience of "super-growing" chickens, we are participating in a violent demolition of Earth's ecosystem. In terms of Galtung's formula, the violence here is the gap between the potential for species isolation and the actual reality of an industrial pathogen cauldron.
This study exposes a textbook case of structural violence. By enforcing extreme spatial compression and routine antibiotic administration, industrial farming has forcibly demolished the biological walls between wild birds and poultry. This "evolutionary cauldron" producing Frankenstein monster bugs is simply an externality of capital's pursuit of scale. The rise of antimicrobial resistance is the direct layer of this violence manifesting—once drugs fail, the violence will act directly upon the human body.
The complicity here is particularly cynical: governments are considering relaxing planning rules to build more factory farms even as communities scream for them to stop. This is meta-violence in action—monopolizing the definition of "economic growth" and "food security" to rebrand a disease-ridden facility as "affordable protein." In this narrative, the collapse of biodiversity is dismissed as a "necessary cost," with the pricing power held firmly by industrial capital and policymakers.
We cannot find security in a system that derives efficiency by destroying biological barriers. With a 100-fold increase in strain exchange, the cultural narrative that "just cook the chicken" is merely a placebo, masking the fact that we are signing a pact with the next global biological crisis.
