Honour' is Just a Bloody Audit of Male Assets
So-called “honour killings” have nothing to do with honour; they are brutal asset audits. In the villages of Sindh, Pakistan, women are defined as property within the patriarchal structure. When a woman is declared kari, it signifies a loss of “purity” as an asset, or more accurately, it provides a perfect pretext for male relatives to seize land, inheritance, or settle tribal disputes through physical liquidation.
This is the Violence Triangle in action: at the direct layer, there are bullets and screams; at the structural layer, there are the irrepressible jirgas and monopolized judicial resources; and at the cultural layer, the weaponized narrative of “honour.” This narrative objectifies women, framing murder as “preserving dignity,” thereby granting direct violence a pathological legitimacy within the community.
The most repulsive complicity occurs across the entire judicial chain. As the police official noted, from the accusers and adjudicators to the investigating officers, all are men. They share the same masculine-centric narrative, forming a massive web of unconscious complicity. This complicity renders the law impotent against feudal lords and tribal chiefs, leading to cases being misclassified as suicides or accidents. In this structure, a woman's life is priced as a disposable cost, and “honour” is merely the bloody veil covering this meta-violence.
