The Visa Officer's 'Probability' and the Objectified Woman

Structural violence often masquerades as individual 'probability judgments,' where women are always the object deemed 'not genuine.'

The UK Home Office rejected a woman's visa on the grounds that they couldn't be sure she would return home, labeling her as 'not a genuine visitor.' The most absurd complicity here is that her husband—same family, same financial evidence, same invitation—was approved. This proves that in the visa officer's cognitive entry, a man's intent to return is a default, while a woman's intent must be quantified, doubted, and judged as a 'probability failure.'

This is not a mere administrative error; it is classic structural violence. In a masculine-centric narrative, men are defined as the anchors of social relations and decision-making subjects, while women are preset as 'dependent' objects. Driven by this subconscious meta-violence, the officer, while performing an 'individual assessment,' is actually executing a gendered screening mechanism: a man's social ties are stable, but a woman's are suspicious, regardless of her professional career or community roots.

This violence is shielded by the cultural mask of 'individual merits,' making it look like a random stroke of bad luck rather than systemic bias. By monopolizing the power of interpretation, the Home Office stripped a specific woman of her right to reunite with her son and redefined her existence as a 'risk management' issue. In this existential war, the woman's identity is reduced to a label to be audited, and her subjectivity is completely erased by the bureaucrat's pen.
