From Lurker to The Staircase: The Slaughterhouse of Power Imbalance
In 'Lurker', the so-called 'development of a relationship' is actually a rapid tilt of the power scale. From an obsequious gofer to a documentary profiler, Matthew uses his neediness as a weaponized expression to infiltrate Oliver's life. He identifies the cognitive entry point—Oliver's vanity—and converts emotional dependency into a tool of control. The moment the power balance shifts, the romantic facade vanishes, leaving only the seizure of subjectivity.
'The Staircase' provides another sample: the moment a man reports his wife's death via 911, the 'perfect husband' persona he meticulously constructed collapses. This is exactly the complicity I discuss—marriage often serves as a field where men perform as protectors in public while exercising structural violence in private to strip women of their agency. When this imbalance hits a breaking point, death becomes the final settlement of this power game.
Whether in pop culture or true-crime dramas, we aren't seeing scripts of 'love,' but the persistent erosion of subjectivity under a masculine-centric narrative. Any 'relationship' that lacks respect for the true optimal expression of the individual is, in essence, a slaughterhouse where one side defines the other.
