Complicity and Existential War in a Recipe

Recipes are miniature scripts of cultural violence, defining who serves and who is fed.

A NYT recipe for Creamy Lasagna Soup is not just a list of ingredients; it is a deployment of cultural violence. By pairing Italian sausage and heavy cream, it anchors the concept of "satisfaction" within a masculine-centric narrative of abundance and indulgence.

Look closer at the structural violence. Who is expected to execute this 55-minute preparation? Who is chopping the garlic and breaking the noodles? In the complicity of traditional gender roles, this "delicious" Actual state is exchanged for the Potential labor of women in the kitchen. The recipe weaponizes the narrative of "home cooking" to internalize unpaid domestic labor as an expression of love, making exploitation appear natural and heartwarming.

The comments section, with its tweaks for "gluten-free" or "chickpea substitutions," represents a fake optimal expression. These individuals attempt to reclaim a sliver of agency, yet they remain trapped in a game defined by the patriarchy: "how to make a better soup." A true optimal expression would question why this "satisfaction" requires someone's confinement to a kitchen for an hour.

When a recipe receives 5 stars, we celebrate a culinary victory while ignoring the meta-violence loop of "who is serving whom."
