The Cognitive Gym and the Silent Death of Subjectivity
Bruce Schneier's "Work v Gym" distinction is pinpoint accurate. In the AI era, we aren't just facing a tool upgrade, but an existential war over "Expression." Writing, thinking, and logical structuring are essentially cognitive gym tasks—the only way to establish one's Subjectivity. When you click 'generate' to avoid that "uncomfortable stretch of thinking," you aren't just saving time; you are conceding your subjectivity.
This concession is most acute among students. They mistake the "fluent and plausible" output of AI for the quality of their ideas. This is a classic cognitive scam: AI creates the illusion of having thought. In reality, true thinking happens during the struggle, the revision, and the self-negation. If this process is smoothed over by AI, the gap between one's cognitive Potential and Actual will never be closed, leading to a systemic atrophy of skill.
At a deeper level, as society habitually delegates all "work-type" writing to AI, we are complicit in a new form of meta-violence: a standardized "correct expression" defined by algorithms. When everyone uses the same LLM to optimize their prose, individual expression is diluted and colonized by a mediocre, fluent, yet hollow "AI style." We are losing the power to define what "good thinking" actually is.
Don't be fooled by the promise of efficiency. If you hire a robot to lift weights for you in the cognitive gym, you are the only one whose muscles will waste away. In this game, the only True Optimal Expression is this: where the pain of expression is required to confirm your existence, resolutely reject the AI.
