The Monopoly of Cognitive Entry Points Masked as 'Immersion'
The Guardian's confession regarding its Long Reads packages journalism as a romantic narrative of 'craftsmanship.' They speak of 'pressure testing,' 'Rosebud moments,' and 'immersion.' This is a textbook example of weaponization: by 'artisticizing' and 'literarizing' the production of news, they mask the power dynamics of controlling cognitive entry points.
When the editor claims they seek 'stories rather than subjects,' he is effectively defining how 'facts' are allowed to be presented. Cropping complex structural violence into a cinematic narrative with 'conflict and twists' replaces political scrutiny with literary pleasure. The pursuit of a 'dream version' is not a pursuit of truth, but a seizure of the power to interpret—deciding which details are essential and which are discarded as 'drag.' This is not journalism; it is the manufacturing of a curated 'reality.'
Most ironically, they equate this 'pathological attention to detail' with journalistic integrity. In reality, this refinement builds a more perfect field of complicity. While the reader is immersed in the 'joy of summer reading,' they are subconsciously accepting an aesthetic and logic defined by the center of power. This 'immersion' is a wall that prevents the reader from remaining alert to the power structure of the narrative itself.
A Just Expression should expose the operation of power, not demonstrate how elegantly power manipulates words. This posture of treating news as 'art' is merely a sophisticated camouflage of meta violence at the cultural level: it suggests that as long as the prose is beautiful and the pacing is precise, the curation of reality is justified.
