From Belmarsh to Broadmoor: A Gambit of 'Patient' Identity
Axel Rudakubana’s transfer from a high-security prison to a psychiatric hospital is framed as 'medical necessity,' but in the existential war of identity, it is a calculated pivot. When a convicted killer realizes the prison structure offers only absolute restriction, he adopts the persona of a 'patient' to reclaim a degree of comfort and resource. This is a classic 'fake optimal expression': performing a role sanctioned by the system to secure short-term benefits while erasing the subject's accountability.
The structural violence here is peak irony. Rudakubana was in the mental health system from 2019 to 2023 and flagged by the Prevent programme multiple times. Yet, because he lacked a 'clear ideology,' the system ignored him. Our institutional definition of 'danger' is obsessed with labels—like religious fundamentalism—while ignoring that violence itself is an output of meta-violence. When violence doesn't fit the prescribed narrative, it is dismissed as a 'directionless anomaly' until it manifests as the corpses of three children.
Victims' families and prison officers now accuse him of 'manipulating the system.' This rage is a reaction to a predator weaponizing pathologization. When a perpetrator can use the medical apparatus to dilute the directness of his crimes, while families face this structural mockery on the anniversary of their loss, the gap between Potential and Actual violence widens. Broadmoor's walls may remain, but the narrative has shifted from 'criminal' to 'patient.' This transfer of interpretative power is, in itself, a form of cultural violence.
