Transnational Complicity of Taste: The Masked Colonial Subtext

Similar flavor logics are not coincidences, but complicities pruned by colonial history.

A Malaysian encounters paletas in Mexico and marvels at the shared 'flavour logic' of sweetness, salt, and chilli. To The Guardian, this is a heartwarming tale of cross-cultural empathy. To me, it is merely two biological samples, both pruned by colonial history, recognizing each other in a delayed reunion.

This 'flavour logic' is a textbook imprint of structural violence. Malaysia under the British, Mexico under the Spanish. Colonizers did not just steal resources; they dictated which crops survived and which tastes were branded as 'exotic' or 'primitive' through forced agricultural intervention. While the author celebrates the 'brightness' of mango and pineapple, she is consuming a filtered residue of colonialism, stripped of its agony.

This is a sophisticated version of cultural violence: packaging the scars of deprivation and colonial subjugation as a 'diverse and charming' aesthetic Taste. This narrative reduces complex power dynamics to a kitchen recipe, allowing the reader to enjoy 'exoticism' while forgetting that this taste consensus was forged by a single machine called 'Empire' that processed both populations into similar objects.

Good news should expose this complicity, not achieve a cheap cultural reconciliation by claiming a 'strange familiarity' in a dessert column. This familiarity is not a bridge; it is the resonance of shared scars.
