Glass Cages and the Complicity of State Machinery

Defining property damage as 'terrorism' is the standard narrative for legitimizing structural violence.

Locking five activists in glass cages and confining them for 23 hours a day is framed as 'preventing social threats' in the German legal narrative. But using Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is textbook structural violence: by redefining the nature of the 'crime,' they equate property damage with threats to human safety, providing cultural legitimacy for direct physical confinement.

The crux here is the weaponisation of 'interpretative power.' The German and British judicial systems are running the same scam: labeling Palestine Action's activities as having a 'terrorist connection.' Once this tag is applied, the law ceases to be a tool for protecting rights and becomes a weapon for purging dissent. When a 23-year-old is denied free communication with lawyers for trying to interrupt arms deliveries, the 'glass wall' is not just physical—it is cognitive. It signals that anyone challenging the complicity between the state and the military-industrial complex is no longer a 'citizen' with full human rights, but an 'object' to be isolated.

The Irish politicians' intervention is a minor meta-level game, attempting to make this black box transparent through diplomatic pressure. However, we must be wary of the performative nature of 'humanitarian concern.' If the focus remains only on whether 'treatment is too harsh' without challenging the meta-violence—why destroying arms factory equipment is defined as terrorism—then this concern is merely a sentimental patch within existing rules. True victory is not a slightly larger cell, but the total shattering of the glass cage.
