Turing’s 'Racy' Fiction: The Erasure of Subjectivity by Hollywood

The 'purification' of a genius is a secondary deprivation of their subjectivity.

Hollywood narratives tend to frame Alan Turing as a lonely, eccentric, logic-driven martyr. This 'isolated genius' trope is a classic form of cultural violence: by defining him as socially inept and purely rational, it erases the fact that he was a complete human being with desires, humor, and a genuine love for sex. This pruning allows the public to pity a sterilized symbol rather than a living man.

The short story uncovered by Sarah Dillon is, in fact, a powerful act of expression by Turing in the face of structural violence—specifically his chemical castration and prosecution. Under the label of 'gross indecency,' he continued to explore sexual tension, class friction, and the pursuit of pleasure. This wasn't just 'playfulness'; it was an existential war. While the system attempted to erase his sexual identity through drugs and laws, he used autofiction to reclaim the right to define his own desire.

We must be wary of the 'humanization' trap. When people marvel that Turing 'actually liked sex' or was 'funny,' they are applying a masculine-centric standard of 'normalcy.' The real good_news here is not that he resembles a 'normal person,' but that an individual destroyed by the state machinery still fought to maintain an unconditioned self through writing. This insistence on authentic expression is far more potent than any belated government apology.
