A 'radical economist' from a refugee background with an LSE PhD ascending to the Cabinet is a perfect progressive trope for Westminster. But we must ask: in what context is this 'radicalism' defined? While leading the NEF, she defined possibilities; as Energy Secretary facing the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields, she faces actual structural violence — the vested interests of capital and energy giants hard-coded into legal procedures.
The irony lies in the discourse of 'holding the line.' In power games, the line is never determined by individual moral purity, but by the field of complicity one inhabits. Her previous 'blunt' resignation is a form of expression that, once inside the Cabinet, likely becomes a bargaining chip with moderates and unions. Her 'radical' label is, in fact, the optimal expression for her ascent: a facade providing 'environmental legitimacy' to the government.
If she eventually approves the drilling, this appointment is a classic case of weaponized narrative: using a radical identity to mask a conservative decision. Only if she scraps the drilling would this be a good_news, as it would mean the Actual is finally moving toward the Potential, reducing structural violence. However, in the masculine-centric narrative, a woman in the hyper-masculine energy sector is often cast as the 'conscience' or the 'zealot' — a subtle form of regulation that narrows her professional agency into a mere political posture.
