In the Temple of Art, No One Asks the Dead Boy How He Is

Ethereal aesthetics are often a veil for structural violence, where complicitors consume pain as art.

The most disturbing part of this piece isn't the recollection of suicide or gangs, but a textbook masculine-centric narrative: converting raw individual suffering into 'nutrients' for future artistic harvest. Vini Reilly speaks of Ian Curtis's suicide with a detached, retrospective air, noting that the pills, the broken marriage, and the despair were all in the songs, yet "nobody—not even Tony—ever asked him about them."

This is structural violence in its purest form. Within the mythologized 'avant-garde' atmosphere of Factory Records, pain was granted aesthetic value but denied existential relief. Tony Wilson is hailed as a 'true altruist,' yet this altruism was rooted in a fetish for artistic expression. While an artist hovered on the brink of collapse, the complicitors were busy documenting that breakdown to construct a narrative of 'genius.' They didn't care about Ian Curtis's actual state; they cared about his potential value as a symbol.

More ironically, this consumption of pain has evolved into a massive circle of complicity. From Harry Styles to the hyperpop scene, artists use 'tributes' to perform a certain class of taste. This 'ethereal' and 'avant-garde' aesthetic is essentially a secondary exploitation of a discarded soul. While people discuss whether a cover used sandpaper or if a guitarist cared about his nails, the biological individual struggling with drugs and despair is completely objectified into a footnote of art history. This is how meta-violence operates: using the language of civilization and art to make a human death look like an inevitable, aesthetic design.
