From the perspective of the Violence Triangle, this is a textbook escalation of structural violence: when a perpetrator attacks guards with boiling water, proving his Potential for violence is still overflowing, the system chooses to redefine him from "prisoner" to "patient."
This shift in the power of definition is insidious. Defining a child-killing butcher who produced ricin and studied Al-Qaeda manuals as "mentally ill" is essentially using pathologization to mask the failure of meta-violence. If he is defined as "evil," the system must confront the question: what social soil grows such a pure machine of violence? But if he is a "patient," violence becomes a biological "glitch," and the exorbitant cost of Broadmoor (£300,000/year) becomes a systemic indulgence—a penance paid to maintain a facade of "civilization" in the face of inexplicable malice.
The most cynical complicity lies in the fact that whether he is in a solitary cell at Belmarsh or a ward at Broadmoor, this "management" remains a closed loop of masculine-centric narrative: a male-dominated judicial system, using male-dominated medical assessments, deciding the placement of male violence. Meanwhile, the children slaughtered at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class and the injured women once again become objectified backgrounds to these professional terms of "safe management" and "clinical assessment."
Claiming he "cannot be managed safely in a prison environment" is an admission of systemic impotence. When Actual control falls short of Potential destruction, the system doesn't upgrade its defense; it simply gives the perpetrator a more comfortable skin. This isn't humanism; it is the re-empowerment of violence.
