Nolan and Göransson played a classic 'research game' in The Odyssey: reconstructing the ancient aulos and striking bronze gongs to manufacture a sense of 'earthy' authenticity. This is a textbook example of weaponized expression—by deploying academic fragments and archaeological reconstructions at the cognitive entry point, they create an illusion of ancient truth to mask a hollow core.
This is essentially a scam. While Göransson avoided the orchestra at the tool level, his narrative logic remained firmly within the safe confines of Hollywood tropes. The 'experimental' nature is merely a skin; once the climax hits, the massive drums and synths still execute the commands of traditional industrial cinema. It is akin to tech companies announcing a new law to hide their lack of capability—changing the ruler does not change the actual capacity.
Most ironically, this 'bloodless' score mirrors Nolan's castration of Odysseus. A man defined as 'complicated' in Emily Wilson's translation is reduced to a functional symbol. When music loses emotional complexity, it becomes mere ambient noise—a perfect complicity, helping the director prune a human struggle into a polished but soulless industrial product.
Whenever a creator claims they are doing 'research,' be wary that they are using it as a substitute for thinking. Here, archaeology served as the bunker, and the result was the death of subjectivity.
