Using Exquisite Lists to Combat Structural Insecurity
Tracee Ellis Ross's carry-on list is a classic defensive drill in an existential war. Starting from the trauma of losing luggage at age 12, she built a precise defense mechanism: using Muji containers, KN95 masks, toilet seat covers, and medical kits to forcibly carve out a controllable, sterile private sanctuary within uncertain public spaces. This rehearsal for "disaster" is essentially an individualized response to structural violence—when an individual realizes the system (airlines, public health, customs) is unreliable and prone to failure, the only power left is "over-preparation."
Interestingly, this defense is packaged as "Style" and "Beauty Fantasy." When she calls compression stockings "Thigh high" to suggest sexiness, or places sensitive items in a "beautiful bag" to mitigate the anxiety of TSA privacy invasion, she is employing an optimal expression: by playing the role of a sophisticated traveler, she masks the survival logic driven by systemic insecurity. It is a clever and decent strategy, transforming fear into aesthetics and the anxiety of losing control into the power of managing details.
Yet, this remains a lonely game. No matter how perfect the list, it cannot erase the black hole that once devastated a 12-year-old girl. This "exquisite survivalism" reveals a brutal truth: within the framework of meta-violence, those in structural weakness (or those aware of it) must pay an exorbitant cognitive and temporal cost just to maintain a semblance of "normal" decency. When someone must spend two weeks preparing a carry-on just to feel safe during a trip, the preparation itself is a structural tragedy.
