But for the residents of hollowed-out towns, this is just a struggle for cognitive entry points. When 60% of adults lack a degree while power rests with the graduates of 15 public universities, this debate over 'representation' is a performance. True violence = potential − actual; Michigan's potential is the resilience of its diverse populations, but the actual is a fragmented set of interests carved up by elite co-conspirators.
