The discourse surrounding Mykhailo Drapatyi’s appointment frames it as a clash between 'humanity' and 'Soviet-style command culture.' But let's be clear: in a violent machine like the military, 'culture' is never about atmosphere—it is about the distribution of the power to price human life. The 'Soviet culture' associated with Syrskyi—costly frontal assaults and the treatment of soldiers as disposable assets—is a textbook masculine-centric narrative. It reduces the body to a tool for a grand narrative, which is the very core of meta-violence.
Drapatyi is welcomed because he pushes authority down to junior officers and accepts accountability instead of shifting blame. Structurally, this is an attempt to shrink the violence gap created by information asymmetry between the commanded and the commander. However, do not be scammed by the word 'humane.' In a state of war, any commander's optimal expression is a gamble between 'winning' and 'preserving life.' As he enters the top job, he steps into a massive field of complicity—the unresolved friction between the defense ministry and the general staff, and the political deadlock of mobilization.
Is this good_news? If it is merely replacing a 'tyrant' with a 'nice guy,' it is nothing more than a cultural PR skin-swap. A true victory would be the subordinates reclaiming the power of interpretation over their own existence. Otherwise, we are simply upgrading the aesthetic of the machine. As long as the underlying logic remains 'trading lives for geography,' this 'de-Sovietization' is just meta-violence wearing a more modern uniform.
