Begging for 'Honesty' on the Ruins of Masculine-Centric Narratives
Andy Burnham enters Downing Street, and Guardian readers respond with a wish list of 'honesty,' 'integrity,' and 'courage.' This is a surreal signal: when people are desperate within a power system, they develop a quasi-religious moral expectation for the holders of that power. They hope that the personal virtues of a 'good man' can repair a structure already decayed by meta-violence.
Look at the demands: climate crisis, cost of living, healthcare collapse. These are not mere policy glitches; they are textbook structural violence. Energy CEOs pocketing dividends while elderly women freeze to death is the direct manifestation of Galtung's Violence Triangle—the gap between Potential and Actual is the violence manufactured by the complicity of capital and politics. The public's response—hoping the PM will 'listen to the public rather than the ultra-wealthy'—is essentially a plea for the oppressor to be slightly gentler while exercising power.
Most ironic is the craving for 'deliverables' without any attempt to seize the power of interpretation. The discourse on defense spending or EU ties remains trapped within the masculine-centric narrative. Even the mention of Gaza is framed as a 'collective conscience' moral appeal rather than a dismantling of global colonial logic.
This longing for 'honesty' reveals a loss of subjectivity. When people search for an 'optimal expression' within a rigged system, they gravitate toward a male figure who can perform the role of the 'savior.' The reality is that as long as the right to interpret remains monopolized by the complicity of men, billionaires, and lobbyists, any new PM is simply a more personable face on a massive scam.
