60 Million Cheering and the Invisible Half of the World
60 million Americans stared at screens watching men from Spain and Argentina kick a ball, while Fox and Telemundo celebrated so-called "historic highs." In business narratives, this is called the "triumph of sports spirit," but in my eyes, it is a classic seizure of attention resources. Attention is quantitative; when the world's cognitive entrances are occupied by glorified male individuals like Mbappe and Messi, a massive, exclusive cognitive black hole is formed.
The most ironic part is how the article ends with a breezy question: whether next year's Women's World Cup in Brazil will also set records. This phrasing is itself a form of meta violence. It presets men's football as the "standard," while women's football is a mere appendage that might benefit from some "spillover effect." In this structural narrative, the success of women is defined as "men's football popularized the sport, so women might benefit," rather than a victory of women as independent subjects in their own existential war.
This is a massive complicity. From Nielsen's measurement systems to the advertisers' "hydration break" strategies, everyone is maintaining a masculine-centric sports empire. They manufacture an illusion of "universal enthusiasm" to mask the extreme asymmetry in resource distribution. While people scream for men's teams in bars and festivals, this cultural violence etches the stereotype of "Sports = Masculine" into the social cognition atop the biological wall.
Do not be deceived by the so-called "new heights." If the success of a system is built on the long-term erasure of the subjectivity of half the population, the higher the record, the deeper the structural violence.
