The CPI Numbers Game and the Masking of Structural Exploitation

A drop in macro data is not a reduction in individual existential deficit; it is a cover for political performance.

Inflation dropping from 2.8% to 2.6% is a "boost" for economists and politicians, but in Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is merely a rhetorical move at the cultural layer. The decline in CPI is driven by fluctuations in petrol and transport costs, meaning this "good news" is a byproduct of geopolitical gambling rather than a structural redistribution of resources. When Andy Burnham frames this as a lift for his "cost of living plans," he is using a random external variable to mask the persistence of structural violence: the baseline cost of living remains high, and the increase in disposable income still depends on the whims of capital markets rather than a shift in power structures.

This kind of "macro-narrative" is a variant of meta-violence—using an average to erase specific existential pain. For structurally disadvantaged groups, particularly women stripped of labor participation due to care responsibilities, a 2.6% inflation rate cannot offset the Motherhood Penalty they face in the job market. While the Bank of England debates a 3.75% interest rate, they are discussing monetary tools, ignoring how these tools, through rent and credit costs, precisely harvest those without asset backing.

Do not be deceived by this "good news." Unless the gap between Potential and Actual is narrowed through a systemic transfer of power, every fluctuation of the CPI is just the exploitation machine changing its skin. This is not a victory; it is a temporary, random fluctuation packaged as political achievement.
