The Myth of 'One-Ingredient' and the Erasure of Bodily Labor
This 1991 recipe is being resurfaced today as a piece of 'One-Ingredient' minimalist aesthetic. But this minimalism is a form of cultural violence: by simplifying the narrative, it erases all structural links between the biological existence of food and its final consumption. Under the airy narrative of 'just four bananas,' the repetitive and tedious bodily labor—peeling, chopping, freezing, blending—is rendered invisible. When labor is defined as 'simple,' its value in the social system is priced at zero.
This obsession with 'simplicity' is essentially the masculine-centric narrative's habitual disregard for domestic labor. In the logic of meta-violence, as long as the result is visible (a scoop of ice cream), the physical exhaustion of the process can be ignored. Interestingly, the commenter who 'broke their parents' blender' reveals the clash between this minimalist narrative and physical reality—the so-called 'simplicity' instantly turns into concrete destruction and anger when it hits the biological wall of machine power limits.
We often derive a sense of control from this 'life-hack' pleasure, but this control is cheap. It isn't achieved by optimizing the system, but by making the complex labor process invisible. A Just Expression would acknowledge that no food is ever 'one-ingredient,' because human time, attention, and bodily energy are always the core input costs.
