Algorithms Aren't Designing Clothes, They're Building Cognitive Cages

The digitalization of taste is cultural violence—the systematic stripping of subjectivity by algorithms.

The NYT piece mourns the 'death of art,' but it misses the point: this is a highly efficient form of cultural violence. When the founder of Edikted boasts that they are a 'data company' rather than a 'fashion company,' he is announcing that the power of the individual to establish identity through Expression has been seized by the algorithm.

In my framework, Expression is the confirmation of existence. Previously, choosing a style was an existential game of defining 'who I am.' Now, 'Fashion Slop' monitors subconscious desires and feeds them back to the user. This isn't a game; it's precision feeding. By manufacturing a 'pseudo-optimal expression' approved by the masses, algorithms erase the possibility of using taste to distinguish class or define the self.

This 'aesthetic convergence' is a weaponized cognitive entry point. When the algorithm defines what is 'cool,' it seizes the pricing and interpretation power. People believe they are choosing, but they are merely executing a script written by a data corporation. This complicity is invisible: consumers buy 'safe' hits for group validation, while capital erases the individuality of designers to turn clothing into low-cost, rapidly iterable commodities.

The irony is that this 'boring' aesthetic is a form of efficient discipline. When all expressions are smoothed over by algorithms, individuals lose the tools to resist or align via visual symbols. We have entered an era of death of subjectivity: you aren't wearing clothes; you are wearing a 'social consensus' calculated by an algorithm to be the least offensive option.
