The appointment of John Healey as chancellor over the radical Ed Miliband proves that Burnham folded immediately under the pressure of market complicity. Healey is a product of financial deregulation and dependence on the City; his presence ensures that the power of interpretation remains monopolized by the same masculine-centric, capital-driven logic. The claim that No 10 will 'tightly grip' policy while employing a former Goldman Sachs economist is a joke—one does not dismantle neoliberalism by hiring its high priest.
Even more cynical is the arrangement of Defence and Foreign affairs. Wes Streeting, who once acknowledged Israeli war crimes, is now in charge of Defence, while Miliband’s foreign policy rhetoric has devolved into 'neutral violence'—using 'conflict' to erase 'genocide' and 'suffering' to hide the perpetrator. This castration of expression is designed to maintain international complicity while performing progressivism for the domestic audience. In this cabinet, migrants and the poor remain the disposable objects of the state, while the elites engage in a collaborative performance of 'reform' within their own echo chamber.
