Thugs Playing 'Heart' and the Complicity of Deification

So-called 'passion' and 'heart' are often mere shrouds for structural violence and a lack of subjectivity.

The narrative of this final was reduced to 'Rational Spain' versus 'Passionate Argentina.' This framing is a textbook example of weaponized expression: romanticizing rudeness, provocation, and physical aggression as 'playing with heart.' When a team internalizes 'dark arts' and provocation as essential tools for victory, it ceases to be sport and becomes a game of who can most effectively deploy direct violence.

More ironically, this team has constructed an extreme, religious-like cult of personality. Their 'religious subservience' to Messi is essentially the surrender of individual subjectivity to a deified symbol. Within this structure of complicity, teammates play the role of 'divine attendants.' This complicity is praised as unity during victory, but collapses into charmless petulance upon defeat. By shunning the Spanish coronation and attempting to drown out Rodri's Golden Ball with chants for Messi, they are trying to maintain a shattered self-narrative by denying the existence of the other.

This arrogance—the idea that they 'weren't here to win friends'—is an extension of meta-violence. It is the belief that possessing a certain 'pure' identity (such as extreme patriotism or idol loyalty) grants an exemption from the basic rules of civilization in public spaces. They believe they are fighting an existential war, but in reality, they are merely performing a pre-set stereotype of the 'passionate Argentine.' This performance provided short-term emotional dividends, but ultimately left them profoundly unappealing before the structural gaze of global civilization.
