The Cockroach Movement: Existential Game After Subjectivity Deprivation
India's "Cockroach movement" is a textbook case of an existential war. In the masculine-centric narrative of meta-violence, marginalized groups are often defined as 'cockroaches'—meaning they are filthy, inferior, and need to be exterminated, despite their resilience. This definition is cultural violence, designed to strip away the subject's agency and legitimize subsequent structural and direct violence.
However, a sharp tactical pivot has occurred: the protesters are no longer attempting to plea for mercy by performing the role of the 'civilized citizen'. Instead, they have hijacked the 'cockroach' label. This is the weaponization of expression. By identifying as cockroaches, they are declaring that if the power center defines their reality as vermin, they will use that very resilience to disrupt the order. This is not just a demand for a minister's resignation, but a forceful seizure of the cognitive entry point.
This strategy represents a transition from a 'fake optimal expression' to a 'true optimal expression' for the structurally disadvantaged. They have realized that within the established narratives of class and masculinity, they will never gain resources through 'just expressions'. Thus, they adopt a radical, self-alienating identity to create an unavoidable glitch in the public space. The cruelty of this game is that they must first accept being objectified before they can strike back using the logic of objectification.
