FIFA's 'Neutrality' is Just a Lubricant for Power
FIFA has long performed the role of a 'sporting sanctuary' transcending politics, but the 2026 World Cup has ripped this veil away. Their claim to neutrality is as fragile as a piece of paper when faced with a single phone call from Trump. When the highest power of a nation can directly manipulate rules to favor its own, FIFA ceases to be a nonprofit and becomes a textbook site of complicity.
This tournament is a manifestation of structural violence. Expanding to 48 teams wasn't about 'globalizing soccer,' but about manufacturing more commercial entry points. The projected $13 billion profit was built by pricing out the working-class fans. This logic is aggressively masculine-centric: prioritizing infinite expansion and maximum profit while objectifying the purity of sport into a tradable commodity.
The ultimate irony is that this power game is packaged as 'one of the greatest sporting events in history.' As Trump and Infantino stood together on the podium, they completed a highly efficient act of complicity—the power-player gains political capital by manipulating rules, while the organizer gains commercial windfalls by selling out principles. In this narrative, soccer is no longer about the game; it is merely a backdrop for the existential war of the powerful.
To say this 'changed soccer forever' is to admit that soccer has been fully subsumed by power. When rules can be rewritten via a phone call, any Just Expression in the sport dies, leaving behind only the worship of power and the greed for gold.
