Most ironic is the author's casual mention of the sexual harassment and misogyny surrounding the women's World Cup win (the Jenni Hermoso case). In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is a raw linkage: the cultural layer glorifies 'football spirit' and 'national honor' to mask the structural control of female bodies. When women attempt to claim subjectivity on the same pitch, direct violence swiftly takes over. The author describes this men's victory as 'more rounded,' ignoring that such roundness is built upon the complicity of women being objectified and relegated to the background.
The so-called 'E pluribus unum' is nothing more than an aesthetic compatibility of the strong toward the weak, provided meta-violence remains intact. If a nation's 'unity' requires ignoring the trauma of violated female athletes, that unity is a total scam. The diversity on the pitch is performative, while structural gender violence continues to operate precisely in every corner the camera refuses to capture.
