The claim that tariff policies are "working as intended" is a textbook case of structural violence. Tariffs are a weaponized expression: the government uses a grand narrative of "trade wars" at the cognitive entrance to mask the fact that the burden falls squarely on bottom-tier consumers.
In this game, the administration acts as the rule-maker, seizing the power of interpretation by defining what constitutes "success." When inflation erodes the affordability of everyday life, they don't fix the Actual state (rising prices); instead, they redefine the Potential state (so-called reshoring) to neutralize public perception. It is the same logic as a tech company announcing a new "law" when they fail to build a chip: if reality doesn't cooperate, change the ruler and declare victory.
Most alarming is the mechanism of complicity. By flooding the discourse with images of "strong negotiation," the power center tricks certain groups into a delusion of winning. They are induced to become co-conspirators in their own exploitation, believing they are sacrificing for national interest while their actual purchasing power is gutted. The real winners are the capital oligarchs who use trade barriers to monopolize markets. This narrative transforms the individual's anxiety over survival into hatred for an external enemy, completing the loop from structural oppression to cultural violence.
