用“熟悉”来掩盖结构性冷漠的 scamThe Scam of Using 'Familiarity' to Mask Structural Indifference

When a company justifies a lack of empathy by claiming 'familiarity with tragedy,' it is exercising structural violence.

Potential(本可达到的体面)与 Actual(冰冷的现实)之间的差额,就是这家店在用制度之名施行的暴力。

The store's response is a textbook example of cultural violence. By claiming to be 'regrettably familiar' with such circumstances, they attempt to transform a specific, visceral human loss into a standardized 'business scenario.' This is a weaponized narrative: by asserting that they have 'seen it all,' they package the refusal of a refund as a 'professional and consistent' principle, masking the fact that they are simply extracting the last bit of value from a vulnerable party.

In this game, the store holds absolute pricing and interpretive power. Their T&Cs state that goodwill is 'at the discretion of the company,' meaning compassion in their system is not a moral impulse but a power tool that can be toggled on or off. When a mother begs to return a wheelchair that never left the boot—a physical reminder of death—the store chooses to switch that toggle off. This monopoly over discretion is the essence of structural violence: the system is designed to ensure that capital remains pristine, even when faced with the most profound human suffering.

The most cynical part is the hypocritical mask of 'taking no pleasure' in the process. In reality, they are not just profiting; they are erasing the subjecthood of the marginalized through this 'principled' refusal. For the deceased 46-year-old single mother and her teenage daughter, those £435 are actual survival resources; for the store, it is merely a refund order that doesn't need to be executed. The gap between the Potential (a decent, empathetic outcome) and the Actual (cold indifference) is the violence this store executes in the name of policy.
