The 130x Pay Gap: A High-Society Party of Complicity

Structural violence is a game of complicity that legitimizes plunder by defining 'value'.

The FTSE 100 CEOs pushing the pay gap to 130 times is more than just an economic statistic; it is a textbook case of structural violence. In this system, so-called 'market pricing' is actually a top-level complicity: boards composed of men from the same strata define 'leadership' and 'strategic value' to package plunder as legitimate remuneration. As CEO pay climbed steadily post-pandemic while workers' cost of living collapsed, this gap became the embodiment of Violence = Potential − Actual—resources that workers could have actually possessed were converted into the digital assets of a tiny elite.

The most ironic detail is Emma Walmsley of GSK. As the only woman in the top ten, she secured £15.6m before stepping down. Do not be fooled by the 'female executive' narrative; this is the essence of the Co-conspirators Theory. Within a masculine-centric narrative, a few women gain a slice of the cake by performing masculine roles of power. Her high pay is not an empowerment of female subjectivity, but a reward for her role as a collaborator in this predatory system. She won the game, but she won by upholding the very rules that marginalize 99% of people, including the vast majority of women.

As for Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s promised 'breathing space,' it is merely another form of cultural violence. Using tender vocabulary to mask structural bloodletting is a scam. Until the pay-setting mechanism is dismantled and workers are placed on boards, any talk of 'economic fairness' is pure PR. Real victory is not giving a drowning person a bit of air, but tearing down the 130x pay structure that is pinning them to the bottom.
