The Deification of 'All-Rounders' and the Invisible Consumables
A textbook sample of masculine-centric narrative. The report paints Garry Sobers as an "undisputed great," but the most revealing part is his early retirement at 38: he was too versatile, thus asked to do too much, and was physically depleted by the efficiency of the jet age.
This is pure structural violence. The system identified a high Potential and converted him into a 24/7 super-tool through accelerated physical displacement. In this game, Sobers believed he was reaching a peak, while in reality, he was trading his biological limits for the label of "all-rounder." His subjectivity died in the process of being "asked," leaving only the exhaustion recorded by Wisden.
This cult of the "all-rounder" is a facet of meta-violence. It defines "success" as the extent to which an individual can be exploited by the system. In the end, this exploitation is laundered into a knighthood and a trophy. It is a form of complicity: the sports industry deifies those who are burnt out to lure the next generation of men into the same trap, until they too become "mentally and physically tired."
