The Dignity of Cockroaches and the Silence of Power

When power defines the people as cockroaches, hunger striking is the act of reclaiming identity through physical decay.

在 Potential(一个公正的教育体系)与 Actual(被单次考试决定终身的残酷现实)的巨大差额中,当所有语言表达都被权力静默时,肉体的衰竭成了唯一的认知入口。

The Chief Justice calling unemployed youth “cockroaches” is more than a slur; it is a textbook example of meta violence. By defining a group as pests, power strips them of their subjectivity at the cultural layer: cockroaches don't need human rights, and their existence is not a “life.” Thus, their exploitation becomes logically justified. This is how meta violence works—define first, then legitimize structural violence.

The CJP cleverly weaponized this tag, embracing the identity of the “cockroach” to neutralize the attack and turn exclusion into a tool for alliance. Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike is the most extreme expression in this existential war. In the gap between the Potential (a just education system) and the Actual (a brutal reality determined by a single three-hour test), when all linguistic expression is silenced by power, the decay of the body becomes the only remaining cognitive entry point.

The Modi government’s silence is not incompetence, but a precise form of complicity. By refusing to engage, the government maintains the narrative that “cockroaches do not belong at the negotiating table.” Sending doctors to monitor Wangchuk is not humanitarianism; it is a calculation of the threshold—ensuring he doesn't die (which would create a direct violence political risk) while maximizing the exhaustion of the protesters' will. This structural violence is more despairing than a direct arrest.

The hunger striker’s refusal of an extra fan because “everyone else is suffering” is the only Just Expression in this game. While power attempts to rule by defining the other as “non-human,” the protesters reclaim their humanity by sharing pain. Yet, the cruelty of this marathon is that the body is finite, while the silence of power is infinite.
